Costa Mesa is another hotbed for Jiu Jitsu in Orange County, like the bordering city Huntington Beach. This is likely due to its convenient location near the 55 and 405 freeways and mixed martial arts culture that stemmed from the original LA Boxing location, when it was owned by Sean McCully and training center for most notable MMA fighters of the 1990's. Orange Coast College has a decade-old MMA club that cost next to nothing for students. Costa Mesa is also home to Calvary Chapel High School, which has a wrestling program nicknamed the "Church Boys," that were often ranked as the #2 prep wrestling program in the United States, behind the powerhouse Blair Academy of New Jersey. At the time Calvary was coached by NCAA Champion John Azevedo and today the Church Boys coaching staff carries on Azevedo's legacy by coaching several of the world’s top UFC fighters and Jiu Jitsu competitors.
